What You Missed, Live! on TiF…
Every week there’s something going on with Top in Fiction. This weekend I spent a little bit of time working on the medallions from January. When they are all ready to go I will let you know so that past featured writers can grab their updated ones.
If you missed our Monthly Recap for January I urge you to go watch the Live video so you can see Mark of the Brand share his process for creating the Top in Fiction rebrand that you should see just about everywhere now.
One of the things that was mentioned during that session was TiF Magazine. It’s a first of many steps I have planned for TiF in the distant future. My goal with the magazine is to have it quarterly. As we are already well into February, 2025 will likely be a practice year for seeing how this issue can get off the ground. But, before we take the plunge on this venture together, there is something I want to mention first:
Quality over quantity matters most at Top in Fiction.
I’ve been thinking about this phrase a lot over the past several months. Getting TiF to a place where we are not only recognized but respected by anyone and everyone on the outside looking in, that requires quality as well as quantity. And in order to produce a magazine that is worth the paper it’s printed on, quality of work is important.
However, I will be the first to tell you that I’m not as well versed as I’d like to be on all genres. Horror and mystery are my favorite genres to read and watch but as for the others? Well, I’m not so keen on many of them. That is where you come in. Reader and writer alike I put a call out to you!
I want to build out a TiF Team that can do what I cannot, which is find and highlight the stories being written and shared every single day. Now, I know this may sound like a daunting task so I want to outline what the ask and requirement is to join the TiF Team. And apologies if this seems like a LinkedIn job posting, but I want to make sure the mission is clear and also that no one feels like the task is too much:
Here is who I’m looking for:
Reads at least one of the fiction genres as outlined in the Genre Resource page.
I prefer you select just ONE that you feel you read the most of that way your time is not monopolized too much.
Select no more than 2 pieces of fiction written from the genre of your choice each week.
That’s it! So, for example, say you enjoy reading romance here on Substack. And you may find yourself seeing different romance writers on your Substack Notes feed because of your clear interest in that genre. Each Saturday you’ll send me 2 stories [+1 alternate] you enjoyed reading the most, adhering to the weekly dates as outlined in the Friday Recommendations post. You can, of course, use the Friday Recommendations post to assist you in finding that genre as well.
For any genre that may not have any stories written in any given week, I will take from the alternate’s given to me from another genre. This is on those instances where one genre may not have anything written.
As to the quality of the writing? I’m working on ways to involve the TiF Team in sharing what works and doesn’t work for each genre and that this open discussion shared with the community will help writers improve upon their work.
JOIN THE TEAM TODAY!
How does this relate back to the magazine, you may be asking yourself? Well, my intention, through the help of the TiF Team, is to take their favorite from the previous 3 months of their selections and put those into the magazine.
Some logistics for this will be that Paid Subscriptions will be activated. A paid subscription will give you the quarterly magazine in Print in the mail. The PDF version of the magazine will be free and downloadable for everyone.
A portion of the Paid Subscriptions will go towards paying the writers who are selected for their story to appear in the quarterly magazine as well.
At the moment I am working on a way to best illustrate the funding for payment of the rebrand, TiF Scholarships, and now the TiF Magazine through donations and hopefully Paid Subscriptions moving forward that will answer questions anyone may have. Turns out it’s not as simple as a bulleted list. Apologies for taking longer on providing this information than intended.
